The final leg of my latest roadtrip across the American Southwest with Davey Wavey was, thankfully, decidedly less rustic and more in the vein of how I generally prefer to travel. That is to say, it was more luxurious and there was not a teepee or recently slaughtered animal anywhere on the itinerary from this point on out.

But before I launch into my diatribe about our adventures in Las Vegas, allow me just a general mention of the fact that, while the city is known for its glitz and gaming, there is far more on offer in this sea of mega hotels and bright lights than only that. In fact, as you will note from the diary of our escapades included herein, there is indeed quite a bit to entertain a pair of road-weary visitors like ourselves who have little interest in gaming tables or slot machines. Over the years, I’ve had a chance to sample quite a few of the finest jewels in Vegas and though I’ll never be a gambler, I can certainly say that the sparkle of gems like those included below, are certain to keep even the likes of me coming back for more.

Now onto the stay.

Our first stop was at the elegant, five-star Mandarin Oriental hotel in the newish Aria complex – a welcome respite after our little WigWam detour down Route 66, I must say. For the non-gambler, hotels like the Mandarin Oriental, along with the Vdara and the Delano, are as close as you can possibly hope to get to an oasis in the heart of the city. One might even go so far as to describe these more tranquil properties as escapes in a destination defined by escapism.

Blissfully peaceful, with the most superlative service, the Mandarin Oriental more than earns its distinction as the only five-star property on the Strip. From the spacious, comfortably appointed rooms that tower some 47 stories above the city to the sleek, sophisticated dining options like Twist (the only venue in the America to offer the celebrated cuisine of Chef Pierre Gagnaire) and the sumptuous Mandarin Bar, the Mandarin Oriental Las Vegas is a case study in understated refinement. It may be all razzle dazzle just steps away but once inside this pristinely stylish outpost, where even the scent of the place is redolent of luxury, serenity reigns supreme.

Tea Lounge, Mandarin Oriental, Las Vegas.

Fittingly, one of my favorite things to indulge in at the Mandarin Oriental is Afternoon Tea which is served in the zen-like Tea Lounge. What more relaxing way to begin a stay in Las Vegas than by enjoying a classic English tea service, complete with scones, clotted cream, and an array of savory and sweet treats while peering out over one of the best views Las Vegas has to offer? Double down on the luxe with a treatment at the 1930’s Shanghai style Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, which is spread over two floors, and offers some of the most unique treatments in the most distinctive environs to be found in all of Las Vegas.

After soaking up as much luxe as an afternoon and evening would allow at the Mandarin Oriental, it was time for a dash of adventure which was amply provided courtesy of Maverick Helicopters whose transport team scooped us up from the hotel lobby the next morning, escorted us to the McCarren Airport and tucked us into an Airbus helicopter for what can only be described as the flight of a lifetime. Over the course of what would be a four-hour tour, we sailed across spectacular sites including the Hoover Dam and Fortification Hill (an extinct volcano) before landing in the Grand Canyon and enjoying a Champagne toast. On the surface, it sounds a glamorous way to experience the Grand Canyon, and indeed it is, but it is also surreal and extraordinary to be afforded a bird’s eye view of one of the seven great wonders of the world.

Grand Canyon, Arizona

With our appetites excited by all that adventure, it was time to engage in that other pastime for which Vegas is famous – dining. The great thing about Las Vegas is that there is at least one of everything you could possibly desire. From White Castle and Shake Shack to Alain Ducasse’s Rivea and Michael Mina’s Bardot Brasserie, the Strip is a foodie paradise and certainly one that we were not remiss in enjoying.

For breakfast or lunch, Della’s Kitchen, is a casual spot perfect for a spot of comfort food prepared with fresh, locally sourced ingredients. More hearty than fancy, Della’s is always a great stop for anyone in search of simple, unfussy food that is prepared well and served in a low-key dining room pleasantly located far enough away from the nearest casino floor so as to make it seem a world apart.

Tender Steak and Seafood, the definitively upscale restaurant that is the crown jewel of the Luxor’s dining establishments, is to the contrary right off the casino floor and yet once one crosses its threshold, the outer world seems to disappear. Kitted out in traditional steakhouse grandeur, Tender’s inviting leather booths are but a precursor to the kitchen’s magnificent parade of artisanal cheeses, seafood and dry and wet-aged steaks, which are sourced from Oregon to New Zealand. Other highly recommended favorites include Carbone, the pricey but fabulous retro-Italian Vegas outpost inspired by the iconic New York eatery of the same name where a rotating menu of Vegas exclusives is among the highlights; and the Bellagio’s Lago by Julian Serrano, where striking views of Lake Bellagio and its dancing fountains pair perfectly with small plates inspired by the Mediterranean.

Come nightfall, though my partner in crime is not a drinker at all and prefers an early night in to an early night out, I must admit to always feeling a trifle frisky when in Las Vegas and few places satisfy my urges like the Skyfall Lounge. Perched high up on the 64th floor of the Delano and possessed of an obstructed 180-degree view of the city, the Skyfall Lounge epitomizes the “go big or go home” aesthetic that defines Las Vegas. If you’re going to have one drink or take one selfie at a bar in Las Vegas this is the one guaranteed to be most memorable.

On our final day in Vegas, we departed from the Strip and headed to the Fremont Street Experience in historic downtown Las Vegas, Nevada. Here I was again, against my better judgement, coaxed into ziplining, which is a unique new way to see old Las Vegas to be sure. Despite my reservations, however, SlotZilla at Fremont Street Experience, as the 12-story, slot machine-inspired zip line attraction is known, was a breeze by comparison to our adventures in Austin. Instead of hikes, there were elevators, beds automatically raised and lowered so that all gear could be appropriately attached by what seemed like a small army of techs, and the ride was as smooth as butter. Not a bad away to kill an hour or two in downtown Las Vegas.

Post-show hijinx with the cast of Zumanity.

For our final evening, it was off to see Zumanity, the sexy Cirque du Soleil show that has been winning raves since it opened in 2003. In 2015, the show got an update which include a new range of acts and was, for a brief stint, hosted by Real Housewives of Atlanta star Nene Leakes. Having had the benefit of seeing both incarnations, I can honestly say the show is fresher, funnier, more risqué and more sexually fluid than ever. While new acts bring a sexual daring to the show, the combination of live music, exposed flesh and saucy banter with the audience is eroticism personified. After the show, we had a chance to interview a pair of the acts, Brandon Pereyda and Michael McNamara, who turned out to be even more endearing than their stage personas, which was a bonus to behold.

Another favorite Vegas entertainment of mine at the moment is Spiegelworld’s Absinthe show which takes place in a big top tent on the forecourt of Caesar’s Palace Las Vegas. Part circus, part cabaret and part vaudeville act with just a hint of burlesque this wickedly sexy production is more intimate than many Las Vegas shows and as such is filled with drama. While The New York Times sums up the entire Absinthe experience as, “Cirque du Soleil as channeled through Rocky Horror Picture Show,” and the Las Vegas Sun call it “the most inventive and daring show to open on the strip in years,” I simply call it revolutionary and a show not to be missed on a trip to Vegas.

And with that another road trip comes to a close and I am only slightly worse for the wear as a result. Small blessings.

Luxury means so many different things to different people. For some luxury is as simple as having something done by someone else that one might normally be required to do without any assistance at all. For others, luxury implies decadence on a grand scale. And still for others, luxury means “best in class” –immersive experiences complete with those discreet elegant amenities that set a place or an experience apart from all other like options. In singular ways, each of the following five destinations subscribe to all of these definitions in such a way that they represent the penultimate vacation getaways for lovers of luxe.

Palma de Mallorca

In addition to providing a safe harbor for the mega-yachts of the uber-wealthy, Palma de Mallorca has long been known as one of the most popular playgrounds for the rich and the royal in Spain’s Balearic Isles. Former King Juan Carlos has often been spotted taking a break from his royal duties at the island’s swankier watering holes, while other bold-faced names ranging from Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta Jones, who until recently owned a 247-acre estate on the island, to Paris Hilton and Brad Pitt have all made the pilgrimage to this rustically luxurious Spanish destination. For the most luxe stay of all, the Belmond La Residencia in Deia is the leading choice for discriminating travelers. Once owned by Richard Branson, La Residencia is the luxury hotel in which Princess Diana famously took refuge when her marriage to Prince Charles reached its well-publicized breaking point, and also the site of Andrew Lloyd Webber 60th birthday celebration for which the entire hotel was hired. How’s that for discriminating? [Tip: Ibiza, Menorca and Formentera are all just a short ferry ride from Mallorca, which is all just an added bonus.]

La Residencia, Palma de Mallorca

Las Vegas

Perhaps the most common misconception about Las Vegas is that it’s primary appeal is gaming. The truth, however, is that there is so much more to do in Las Vegas than taking turns among the plentiful craps tables and slot machines. In fact, with very little effort, you can treat yourself to a luxe holiday in Vegas that has nothing at all to do with any of the aforementioned activities and feel none the lesser for it – particularly given that there is probably more luxury per square foot in Las Vegas than almost anywhere else in the world. Wondering where to start? First of all, there’s pampering at a memorable array of spas like the sleek, modern BATHHOUSE Spa at the Delano, the massive 80,000 square-foot Spa at the Aria, and the serenely gorgeous Spa at the Mandarin Oriental, among others.

Combined with unique, upscale shopping experiences at the likes of the Wynn Esplanade and the Shops at Crystals, fine dining at restaurants helmed by revered chefs like Alain Ducasse (Rivea at the Delano), Julian Serrano (Lago at the Bellagio) and Michael Mina (Bardot Brasserie at the Aria), an assortment of shows featuring the biggest names in music and entertainment, and VIP limo service to and from any and everything, what could make for a more decadent getaway?

Skyfall Lounge at the Delano, Las Vegas

London

Does it not seem fitting that the home of the British royal family would also be home to an escape filled with royally, luxurious delights? Such would most definitely be the case. From the old world elegance of the Goring Hotel, where Queen Elizabeth II is a regular guest for afternoon tea, to the sumptuous retail offerings of Bond Street and Dover Street (where Victoria Beckham opened the flagship store for her wildly successful eponymous clothing line), to the five star hotels in May Fair and Knightsbridge (think the classically sophisticated Egerton House, the landmark Claridge’s, the esteemed Connaught and the Firmdale Hotel’s Knightsbridge outpost), luxury is London’s forte. Fill your itinerary with visits to the royal warrant certified providers of goods and services to the royal household and you’ll find yourself in luxe overload,

A suite at The Goring, London.

Carmel-by-the-Sea

If there is one word that best describes the seaside town of Carmel-by-the-Sea, it might be surreal. Santa Barbara may be heralded by some as the California’s answer to the Riviera, but Carmel-by-the Sea is perhaps endowed with a better claim to the title. A charming boutique-filled town commingled with an unspoiled beach dramatically surrounded by bluffs and a rugged coastline evokes the feeling of la dolce vita best embodied by the likes of Capri and St. Tropez. Among the favorite stops for an elegant stay in Carmel is the Doris Day -owned Cypress Inn in the heart of town and the Clint Eastwood-owned Mission Ranch, where the vistas are jaw dropping and the Martinis (along with the company) at the bar are otherworldly.

Mission Ranch , Carmel-by-the-Sea

Turks & Caicos

Extremely elegant accommodations specializing in privacy, pristine beaches, crystal clear waters, perfect weather year-round, a steady flow of rum-inspired cocktails and not a care in the world make Turks & Caicos a standout among luxe travel getaways. Moreover, if a destination is to be judged by the star power of its regular visitors, Turks and Caicos is a winner on multiple levels. Among the starry visitors of late to the islands are Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie, who spent their holidays at Donna Karan’s villa in Parrot Cay, Justin Bieber, Christie Brinkley, and newlyweds Sofia Vergara and Joe Manganiello who spent their 7-day honeymoon holed up in a remote villa at the exclusive Parrot Cay Resort. Need I say more?

Poolside on Parrot Cay, Turks & Caicos

When asked what city I consider to be quintessentially ‘American’, many people are often surprised to find that my answer is not New York, Los Angeles or even San Francisco. Instead, my response to this query is invariably Las Vegas.

Why?

Because Las Vegas is the kind of place that could only exist in America. From its bright lights to its towering buildings to its non-stop entertainments, Las Vegas is a dizzying spectacle of delights, the like of which is not to be found in any other part of the world, though many attempt to emulate it.

That fact established, there is a great deal to discover in contemporary Las Vegas. In fact, there is an entire world beyond the gaming tables and slot machines which makes having a game plan for any visit essential. With that thought in mind, I offer my own itinerary from a recent 72-hour visit to Las Vegas as a guideline for planning your own Vegas vacation.

Day 1

Check-in

My host hotel for this visit was the Tropicana Hotel, a Las Vegas legend that has recently undergone a major renovation which has craftily balanced celebrating the property’s historic early days with the contemporary travelers’ demands for modernity. The result is a fun retro-chic hotel with a decidedly South Beach vibe and a dash of kitsch thrown in for good measure. Club suites are beyond spacious and, on a sunny afternoon, the property’s lush two-acre pool area is more dreamily reminiscent of South Florida than the Nevada desert (that is, of course, if you make allowances for the pool’s terribly convenient swim up black jack tables).

After exploring the property and getting settled, it was off to a special dinner hosted for myself and my fellow cohorts at Tender, the Luxor’s signature steakhouse. To be sure, there is no shortage of steakhouses in Las Vegas proper but Tender is exceptional on all counts. Do prioritize a visit to this wonderful surprise of a restaurant. Do order the chilled seafood tower. Do try any of the dry or wet aged specialty steaks on the menu. And for the love of Liza Minelli and all things gayly sacrosanct, make it a cheat night and sample the Bananas Foster Bread Pudding for dessert.

Day 2

What would a stay in Las Vegas be without breakfast in bed on at least one morning? Taking advantage of a little break in my itinerary, day 2 of my visit began with this required indulgence.

Midday I headed down to the Neon Museum for a complimentary walk down what might literally be considered Las Vegas’ very own memory lane. A veritable graveyard for the signs that have brought Las Vegas worldwide renown, the Neon Museum is infinitely more interesting than you might think at first glance. The guided tour lasts just under an hour and is filled with all sorts of interesting tidbits about Las Vegas history told through the story of the signs that once adorned the city’s most popular destinations. Better yet, it’s the perfect diversion for anyone wanting to dodge the gaming tables for a spell and/or give their drinking wrist a good solid rest.

View from the Observation Wheel at The Linq

Following a quick dinner back at the Tropicana’s Bacio, it was off for a spin on the 550-foot-tall High Roller Observation Wheel at the LINQ to experience some of the best views in all the city. For those not familiar with Observation Wheel, it’s basically a gigantic Ferris wheel with enclosed cabins, some of which, like ours, are even outfitted with bars. Best of all, each revolution takes a full 30 minutes so there’s ample opportunity savor the sights and the cocktails.

Views, cocktails and the lights of Las Vegas…what could recommend a thing more highly? Enough said.

To wind down the night, I was fortunate enough to be invited to Frank Marino’s Divas Las Vegas show at the LINQ, which shows no signs of wear and tear despite being one of the longest running shows on the Strip (Marino, for the record, is the Strip’s longest running headliner). As the name suggests, the show features a number of drag performers serving up memorable lip-sync performances to the musical stylings of legendary divas like Tina Turner, Diana Ross and Patti Labelle as well as current favorites like Britney Spears, Pink and Beyoncé. It’s 75-minutes of great fun and innumerable glitzy costume changes by Marino who deftly weaves the performances together seamlessly with bawdy humor, sequins, and what I can only imagine is an awful lot of hair spray.

Post-show with Frank Marinos Divas performer Larry Edwards

Day 3

I spent the early part of day 3 strolling down the Strip and nipping into those “only in Vegas” spots that always seem to call to me. No matter how many times I visit, I am always confronted with the same sense of awe by all the options Las Vegas presents. As I wandered, I honestly wondered if there was any other place on earth with such a massive concentration of global brands and eateries in such relative proximity. My conclusion was that if there was, I had not yet discovered it.

Sage, Las Vegas

Later that evening I was treated to the chef’s tasting menu at Sage, one of the menagerie of restaurants at the ARIA. An extravagantly expansive space, elegantly outfitted with all the trimmings of a standalone eatery, entering Sage is to enter a world unto itself from the minute guests cross the threshold of its entrance. Meanwhile, with James Beard award-winning Chef Shawn McClain at its helm, the restaurant’s nuanced menu which is laser focused on New American cuisine is more than the equal of its impressive environment. The meal began on a high note with an artfully presented starter comprised of egg yolks, topped with Kaluga caviar, crème fraiche and dill and continued rise to higher heights with each successive course. Of particular note was the Grilled Beef Ribeye Cap served alongside silky celeriac and bone marrow which was as exquisite to the eye as it was to the palate. With other favorites like Grilled Foie Gras, Venison, and Oyster Beef Tartare lining its menu, it’s little wonder that Sage remains a Las Vegas favorite.

Finally, for my last night in Vegas I was invited to check out Spiegelworld’s Absinthe show which takes place in a big top tent on the forecourt of Caesars Palace. More intimate than many Las Vegas shows, Absinthe is a thoroughly updated, wickedly sexy production that is part circus, part cabaret and part vaudeville act with just a hint of burlesque. While the outrageous stunts performed in the show keep the audience members on the edge of their seats (of which not one is bad), the show’s ringleaders keep things moving along with debauched humor well beyond the bounds of PG-13. Interestingly, not long before this trip I had lamented to a friend that it had been a while since there had been a revolutionary entertainment event in Las Vegas, but after seeing Absinthe I realized that I just hadn’t looked hard enough.

Day 4

With my trip at an end, I reflected on the previous 72 hours as my taxi pulled away from the Tropicana en route back to the airport. That old saying, “What happens in Vegas, stays in Vegas” came to mind and I wondered if it might not be time to put that statement to rest just like the signs on display at the Neon Museum. Because what one experiences in Las Vegas these days is most certainly not something that should be quietly filed away, it is instead something to shout about. Just a thought.

LAS VEGAS, NEVADA
In Vegas, sometimes bigger is just bigger, but in the case of the recently opened 80,000-square-foot spa at the Aria Casino Hotel, bigger is indeed better. With 62 treatment rooms, a full-service salon, a 16,000-square-foot advanced fitness center, boutique, fire lounge, poolside spa cabanas, and the first co-ed spa balcony in Las Vegas history, The Spa at Aria is a goliath in a city where size absolutely matters. As you enter this desert retreat, massive floor-to-ceiling windows magnify the sense of spaciousness. Once inside, Japanese influences abound, including a stone and water garden adorned with sacred Japanese Aji stones, blessed in Japan, to inspire calmness and tranquility upon arrival. Though a wide range of massages is on offer at the Aria, the standouts are the ones steeped in Asian traditions, like the Thai Poultice Massage (50 min/$180) where the century’s old Thai tradition of using heated muslin parcels infused with lemongrass, ginger, and prai extract, is combined with a warm oil massage to create a transcendent experience. Of the mix, the Ashiatsu massage (50 min/$180), which blends Shiatsu and Swedish techniques for pressure lovers, is perhaps the most unique experience on the menu. Other highlights include the Shio Salt Room where salt-infused air commingles with a wall of illuminated salt bricks and salt lamps to create an environment that promotes the healing of skin irritations and upper respiratory problems. There is also the Ganbanyoku Stone Bed Room—the only one of it’s kind in the US—which promises all manner of holistic benefits ranging from improved blood circulation to increased metabolism. During the Ganbanyoku treatment, negative ions and far-infrared rays are emitted as you relax on a bed of heated black stone that sooths muscles and almost mystically dispatches aches and pains from the body. No matter what you believe, there is indeed something spiritual about the experience. www.arialasvegas.com/spa
